About Hal Cazalet

Hal Cazalet divides his time between the USA and Europe, performing in opera, musical theatre, and cabaret. He trained at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London and the Juilliard Opera Centre in New York, where he won the Shoshanna Foundation Award.

Hal is a passionate advocate of new work and has created leading roles in world-premiere operas, including:

  • Nicholas in Death and the Powers by Tod Machover (Monte Carlo Opera, Boston’s Majestic Theatre, Chicago Opera Theatre, The Dallas Opera – Live Simulcast).
  • Gerard in Les Enfants Terribles by Philip Glass (BAM Opera House, New York; US & European tours; Nonesuch Records).
  • Charles in The Music Programme (Polish National Opera, Linbury Studio at the Royal Opera House).
  • Heracles in Heracles (Weill Hall, Carnegie Hall).

Hal’s extensive repertoire includes:

  • Richard Dauntless in Ruddigore (Opera North, Grand Theatre Leeds, Barbican, UK Tour, BBC Radio 3).
  • Cascada in The Merry Widow (English National Opera).
  • Albert in Albert Herring (Glyndebourne Touring Opera).
  • Lysander in A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
  • Quint in The Turn of the Screw.
  • Orfeo in L’Orfeo.
  • Belmonte in Il Seraglio.
  • Macheath in The Beggar’s Opera and Threepenny Opera.
  • Prunier in La Rondine (Opera Holland Park).
  • Tobias in Tobias and the Angel (Young Vic/English Touring Opera).

International Performances

In the USA, Hal debuted at Lincoln Centre with L’Infinito by Tristan Keuris (World Premiere, WNYC live broadcast) and performed at the Kennedy Centre under Christopher Hogwood with the NSO in Mozart’s The Impresario. He has toured Europe, Japan, and the Canary Islands with the Monteverdi Choir under Sir John Eliot Gardiner, and performed at:

  • The Royal Opera House, Covent Garden.
  • The Albert Hall, BBC Proms.

Cabaret & Collaborations

Hal has performed in cabaret alongside Tim Rice, Stephen Fry, and Janie Dee. His collaborations with pianist Steven Blier include composing and performing for The New York Festival of Song (NYFOS). Highlights include:

  • The Land Where The Good Songs Go (Library of Congress, DC; Wigmore Hall, London; Danny Kaye Playhouse, New York).
  • Topsy Turvy (Weill Hall, Carnegie Hall).
  • Rodgers, Rodgers, and Guettel (Kaufmann Centre, NYC).

Teaching & Media

Hal has served as visiting faculty at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and Juilliard School. He has appeared on BBC TV and Radio, including A Portrait of Wodehouse, Loose Ends, and In Tune.

Composer & Lyricist

Hal’s works include:

  • First Night (Aspen Music Festival, Juilliard School).
  • Agnus Dei (Santa Fe Music Festival, BBC Radio 3).
  • The Happy Prince (Lyric Theatre, West End).

Recent Projects

Hal recently performed Play on Words at The Crazy Coqs (Live @ Zedel), a one-man show celebrating the great wordsmiths of Broadway.
